To celebrate their new packaging - which is all either recyclable, compostable, or biodegradable, Montezuma is opening a Waste Not, Want Not Recyclable Shop at 67 Neal Street for two days, on 13th & 14th March 2020. When you visit the shop you will be able to swap your unwanted packaging for tailor-made treats, designed to imitate some of the biggest waste culprits in the UK food industry – think grab-and-go salad bowls, sandwich wrappers and those iconic black sushi trays. There will also be a big art work in the window, designed to look like an overflowing waste bin, but actually deliciously edible. Sounds amazing!

"What do you do with your shop-bought lunch containers? Is your sandwich wrapper, crisp packet, or sushi tray recyclable? Montezuma’s wants people to re-think their daily habits by saying no to waste and yes to chocolate – and it’s doing so in the most appetising of ways…
Montezuma’s is inviting people to experience the sweet side of eco living, with its ‘WASTE NOT, WANT NOT RECYCLABLE SHOP’ in Covent Garden. To celebrate the launch of the brand’s new sustainable packaging, the award-winning British chocolate company is opening a pop-up shop, where you can swap your unwanted packaging for tailor-made treats, designed to imitate some of the biggest waste culprits in the UK food industry – think grab-and-go salad bowls, sandwich wrappers and those iconic black sushi trays.
The beautiful, bespoke treats may look like trash, but they’ll actually be formed from Montezuma’s classic white chocolate, filled with its indulgent truffle centre, and hand painted for a realistic finish! All chocolate lovers need to do to get their hands on these decadent chocolates, is simply hand over their used food containers - proving that recycling has more than just the one benefit! Sitting in the window of the store will be a fully edible 3D artwork, made to replicate a bin overflowing with non-recyclable rubbish. The piece will highlight the unrecycled waste that ends up on landfill each year. The indulgent installation will be lit up 24 hours a day, to inspire passers-by to make more sustainable choices when it comes to food.
The venture comes in the wake of Montezuma’s newly designed packaging, 100% of the Montezuma’s newly designed packaging is either recyclable, compostable, or biodegradable – a first for a British chocolate company. Taking on a large-scale recyclability project, the team at Montezuma’s looked at every aspect of its packaging process. As well as using recyclable inks, adhesives, stickers and tapes, the company’s best-selling chocolate bars will now be delivered in 100% paper and card cartons, eliminating the non-recyclable metallised wrappers.
To highlight the hard work that has gone into creating the sustainable range, Montezuma’s pop-up shop will also feature a wall that will educate visitors on the company’s research and development journey. Interactive panels will show the difference between its old and new packaging and will reveal the company’s commitment to doing what’s right – not what’s easy!
Founded in 2000 by Helen and Simon Pattinson, Montezuma’s has never compromised on quality or taste, using the very best ingredients and ethically-sourced cocoa from plantations that meet its strict ‘Trading Fairly’ policy. It also places the environment at the heart of how it does business and every new product will now be delivered in either recyclable, biodegradable or compostable packaging."
The Merchant's Tail is a collaborative pop-ups shop from two online brands, Cheshire & Wain, who specialise in gifts for cats, and Fetch & Follow, who do the same for dogs. It's now open Wednesdays to Sundays until 27th November at 270 Hackney Road, E2, and it's a treasure trove of items like collars, treats, toys, and even coats. They will also be holding regular events through the run of the pop-up, including having a pet photographer in. I visited yesterday, and ended up buying Christmas presents for Tiger, Lola and Pip. A brilliant shop.

"Inspired by the loving tales their pet-owning customers share with them and a mutual appreciation for one another’s brand, pet labels Cheshire & Wain and Fetch & Follow have teamed up to curate The Merchant’s Tail – a Christmas pop up to delight cats, dogs and the people who love them. This co-hosted, lifestyle store is set to offer a friendly shopping experience, where pet owners can indulge their furry friends with the loveliest of Christmas gifts, enjoy a host of exciting events and engage with their animal-loving kinfolk.
Beyond the gorgeous goodies from Cheshire & Wain and Fetch & Follow that lay in-store, The Merchant’s Tail will play host to a series of walks and in-store workshops for pets and their people. Dates and full details will be announced soon at Fetchandfollow.com and Cheshireandwain.com but expect a festive pop-up photo studio with popular pet photographer Rachel Oates, a Lucky (Waving) Cat customisation workshop, a winter skincare Walk & Talk event with Malin + Goetz and a workshop focussed around caring for your pets during the winter months and Christmas with Vet in the City Dr Ciara."
Sainsbury's is opening a 3 day pop-up meat-free 'Butcher's Shop' for World Meat Free Week from Fri 21st - Sun 23rd June at 146 Bethnal Green Road (the Brick Lane end). There will be lots of Sainsbury's own meat-free products to buy - many of which you'll be able to taste for free - plus experts on hand to share recipes and tips.

"Sainsbury’s has announced it is opening the UK’s first ever Meat-Free Butchers… just in time for World Meat Free Week.
At first glance, the three day pop-up shop will look no different than a traditional meat butchers. But the sausages hanging in the window will in fact be the entirely vegan ‘Shroomdog’ sausages, and the mince will be made from pea protein.
The in-store butcher will be specially trained for plant-based cooking, sharing recipe advice and tips to help customers get invovled in World Meat Free Week, which encourages people to try more plant-based foods.
Boasting over a dozen high quality fresh foods, customers of the East-End ‘Butchers’ will get to choose a cut of the best boneless bites, before the food is weighed and wrapped as in a traditional store.
From the famous Sweet & Smoky BBQ Pulled Jackfruit and Cumberland Shroomdogs, to the brand new Veggie Ribz and Moroccon Vegbabs, customers can get their hands on these moreish meat alternatives, all for a discounted price.
Hungry visitors will not only be able to buy the plant-based, raw ingredients for their dinner but will also have the chance to taste many of the delicious products entirely for free.
This comes as Sainsbury’s has seen a 24% increase in customers searching for vegan products online, and a 65% increase in sales of plant-based products year-on-year - with sales having doubled in the last year compare to the previous year. However, many are still daunted by the prospect of cooking with plant-based foods.
We have carefully selected the products on offer from the growing range of over 100 plant-based products now available at Sainsbury’s, so customers are in for a real meat-free treat when visiting the butchers!”
Bruno's Bakes & Coffee is a pop-up independent bakery & coffee shop at 202 Brick Lane (the Bethnal Green Road end, near to Bacon St). It was created by award winning pastry chef Bruno Breillet, and has previously been open in Rochester, Kent, but has now moved to London with this pop-up, provisionally open until the end of May. Expect lots of freshly baked French patisserie both sweet and savoury. Sounds wonderful!

"Bruno's Bakes & Coffee is a small independent bakery/coffee shop specializing in classic French and modern American cakes, tarts and savoury items.
Bruno Breillet is the pastry chef and he makes everything on site. You could come in on any given day and find a classic Breton Kouign Amann sitting next to a Peanut Butter and Chocolate Pie, or a Strawberry Tart next to a Caramel Popcorn Cheesecake. We also have a small savory menu based around Croque Monsieurs, perhaps having three or four different kinds to choose from. Basically, our menu changes constantly depending on Bruno’s mood and of course our customers’ desires. Bruno has won a Master Chef Live/BBC Good Food Show Bursary Award and has received a total of 5 stars from the Guild of Fine Food’s Great Taste Awards. He’s been featured in Delicious Magazine and has recipes in the DK book, Chocolate: Indulge Your Inner Chocoholic."
Folk singer Hollie Haines is launching her new album The Letters To My Last Love as a pop-up at Old Street Underground - in the tunnels under the roundabout that lead to the tube station - for six days from Monday 4th - Saturday 9th February 2019. Hollie will be there herself for the whole time, with musician and artist friends, so pop in to enjoy a chat or listen to some music.

Musicians have used pop-ups before - for example Enter Shakiri opened a pop-up shop in Camden to promote an album three years ago - but this is far more extensive. Well done Hollie!

"I'm so excited to announce that after the release of my 7-track concept album Letters To My Last Love I will be taking up a week long residence at one Old Street Underground's famous Pop-Up spaces to bring Letters to life in an immersive installation. Alongside some wonderful artists and musicians the Pop-Up will include live music, art and a chance to follow the journey of love, healing and discovery that the album carves out. Join us anytime during the week to explore the experience yourself."

Netflix has created a pop-up to tie in with the release of the Black Mirrir 'choose your own adventure' episode Bandersnatch. It's called Tucker's Newsagent & Games', it's in the store next to the old entrance to Magic Roundabout (which closed in 2018). I visited on Saturday 5th January, and was able to take pics through the window of items including mocked up 80s-style VHS covers for Black Mirror episodes, including Nosedive, plus fake game posters and more. The man selling juices and smoothies in the store next door thought that it might be open next week (from Mon 7th), but it's possible it will never actually open, and just serve as an elaborate billboard... Great concept though!
"A pop-up store inspired by the Black Mirror movie Bandersnatch has appeared at London’s Old Street tube station.
The shop, named Tucker’s Newsagent and Games was first spotted yesterday (January 2), before the shutters were lifted this morning to reveal the whole display.
An initial glimpse reveals that the 80s themed store is decked out with promotional materials for some of the Tuckersoft games that feature in the Netflix film – including Valdack’s Revenge, Nohzdyve and the titular Bandersnatch.
There’s also subtle references to other Black Mirror offerings too, including the acclaimed San Junipero and 2017’s USS Callister.
However, there’s the small matter of a ‘Be Right Back’ sign that hangs on the window – meaning that fans will have to admire the faithful recreation from the outside."
Amazon is opening a 4 day pop-up shop in Shoreditch, called Amazon's Home of Black Friday, from Thursday 22nd - Sunday 25th November 2018. Brands featured include LEGO, Xbox, Samsung, Le Creuset, and there will also be a Whole Foods market, and a pop-up bar. As with other Amazon pop-ups, I don't think there will be any stock that you can take home on the day, but instead 'Smile Codes' to scan on your phone so that you can add items to your Amazon basket to be delivered to you, This one is going to be busy!!
